Company profile
Naledi Foundry is a member of the 100% black owned Naledi Inhlanganiso Group and is one of the few large foundries operating in South Africa. The foundry has origins dating back to 1947 when it was established as African Malleable Foundries in the Benoni Industrial area of Gauteng. Various acquisitions and name changes subsequently occurred.

The foundry has through the years been very involved in the automotive sector where it was a major casting supplier of components to Toyota, General Motors, BMW, Nissan, Ford and VW.

During and after the financial crisis in 2008 the management at the time decided to diversify the foundry away from the automotive sector and many of the automotive components and products manufactured at the time were stopped being cast or phased out.

In 2013 a consortium consisting of the IDC, Sibusiso Maphatiane and an Employees trust acquired the majority stake of Dorbyl Ltd, a listed entity who owned the foundry.

Immediately after delisting in July 2014 the shareholder initiated an extensive capital investment plan into the foundry as well as a corporate restructuring to separate the foundry from the rest of the Dorbyl group. The restructuring was completed in May 2016 and the capital investment programme in May 2017.

Naledi foundry supplies high quality components to the mining, automotive and transport, railway, infrastructure and rolling stock sectors in the local and international markets. Components cast by Naledi Foundry include brake housings, brake shoes, retarder pots, rail chairs, axle end caps, shrouded end caps, backing rings, heel blocks and skid sprags, to mention only a few.

Naledi Foundry’s expertise spans over 60 years of engineering and metal casting production. Naledi Foundry is currently the only large black-owned foundry in South Africa.

Naledi Foundry occupies a 110 000m² site employing over 220 staff. The foundry has 250 tons per day melting capacity, which includes two production lines; An automated Georg Fischer moulding line and a floor moulding (jobbing) line. The foundry casts in SG and grey iron and has ISO 9001 accreditation.

The foundry also has in-house design and development capabilities, CNC machines and CMM measuring equipment.

Naledi Foundry now manufactures grinding media from quality high-chrome iron on state-of-the-art computer-controlled equipment. The grinding media can perform in a broad range of mills with the ability to withstand the harsh environment within the mill.

Medium and heavy commercial vehicles
In this sector the Naledi Foundry supplies mostly first tier and various OEM’s with castings such as hubs, brake drums, brake disks, engine mounts, steering knuckles, gear box cover plates and others. This includes MAN trucks, Henred Fruehauf, BPW Axles and Bell Equipment.
