The Quantolux QLX1 is a portable optical emission spectrometer with laser excitation. It allows the user to perform positive material identification (PMI) and at the same time rapidly analyse the material to quantitatively determine its elemental composition in weight per cent per element.
Due to its innovative design, the QLX1 is capable to perform a full analysis for a wide range of metals. Multiple metal apps can be combined in one instrument – even added later.
The analytical performance of this instrument is comparable to mobile spark spectrometers, while the QLX1 also extends this to smaller samples, wires, etcetera without the need of adapters – and at much reduced operational expenses and with more benefits on time-savings and maintenance. It is superior to handheld devices due to spectral range and resolution, bigger battery and larger argon reservoir.

Typically, the instrument is used for metal sorting, positive material identification (PMI) and analysis. Due to its superior analytical performance, QLX1 even covers demanding applications like carbon in low alloy steels to separate L-grades, nitrogen in duplex steels, or the detection of phosphorus and sulphur.
The probe of the QLX1 is super light and very handy. It contains a hi-res UV optic with CMOS detector and the laser head. The LED on top indicates when laser is on or an optional display shows the grade and results. The probe is connected to the main unit with a 1.5m hose. The weight of the probe is approximately 840 grams.
The opening is just 3mm and, thus, also suitable for smaller samples, like weld seams, for example. Light paths are protected by sapphire windows.
Due to the open laser beam, the instrument is classified as 3B. For certain applications the use of safety goggles is recommended.

Steels
The analytical app for steels is divided into five different sub-methods: Fe – orientation, low alloy steel, stainless steel, tool steel and manganese steel.
Measurement parameters
A typical measurement takes 3 seconds. This includes a pre-spark and several channel-specific integration windows. The analysis is an average of 2 or 3 subsequent readings on different spots on the sample. For PMI applications, however, most users just perform a single shot. If in doubt, a second reading is done.
